Sister Julie Maria Pintal, OP of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Ossining, New York, died June 13, 2017 at St. Catherine of Siena Convent, Caldwell, New Jersey. Sister celebrated her 100th birthday on March 11, 2017.
The daughter of the late Thomas J. and Maria Marchand Pintal, she was born March 11, 1917 in Champlain, Quebec, Canada.
Sister Julie entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Fall River on September 8, 1937. She made her First Profession August 20, 1939 and Final Profession on August 20, 1942. Sister Julie earned her BA in French/Education from Providence College and her MA in French from Rhode Island College in Providence RI.
Sister Julie taught at St. Anne School in Fall River MA (1942-43), Dominican Academy Elementary School in Fall River MA (1943-45, 1962-63, and 1975-76), and in the Dominican Academy High School in Fall River where she was also librarian(1945-56 and 1963-71). After serving as novice mistress for the Dominican Sisters of Fall River (1957-61), Sister Julie taught at St. Peter School in Plattsburgh NY (1961-62 and 1974-75). She also taught at Bishop Gerrard High School in Fall River (1971-74). Sister was religious education coordinator for St. Anne Parish in Fall River MA (1976-79) and continued at St. Anne Parish working in the office (1976-87 and 1992-2002). She also served on the council of the Dominican Sisters of Fall River (1982-92). Sister Julie moved to the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Newburgh Center in 2002. While living there, Sister completed training in the Literacy Volunteers of America, and was involved in that program as a tutor for over three years. In 2009 Sister moved to Meadowview at the Wartburg, Mount Vernon, NY and after that to Saint Catherine of Siena Convent in Caldwell, New Jersey.
Sister Julie was an avid reader, a good listener, a counselor to many, and an excellent knitter. Her Rosary was her constant companion.
Sister Julie is survived by her sisters Rita Pintal Pinon, Angele Pintal of Laval, Quebec and by nieces and a nephew. She is predeceased by her parents, her sisters Marie-Olive Pintal and Lucie Pintal and by her brothers Gilles B., Claude G. and Roland Pintal.
Sister has chosen to be cremated. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at the Mariandale Chapel at the Center of Hope in Ossining, New York. This will take place on Friday, June 23rd at 11 AM. A Memorial Mass will be offered for her on Tuesday, June27 at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Fall River at 10 AM. Burial of the cremains will follow immediately at the Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Robert J Prout Funeral Home, Verona, NJ.
