The Dominican Sisters Conference has issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s decision on May 8, 2018, to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal.
The Dominican Sisters decry the Trump Administration’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Iran nuclear deal. Despite its flaws, the multilateral deal is widely recognized as having achieved its goal of preventing Iran from continuing to develop its nuclear weapons capacity.
This imprudent, destabilizing action not only threatens to bring back the specter of a nuclear-armed Iran, but also further isolates the United States from global leadership, raises tensions among allies, and sows discord among adversaries.
“Blessed are the peacemakers!” (Mt 5:9)
As women of faith, we call upon our nation’s elected leaders to act judiciously to mitigate the deleterious effects of this decision. May their actions be, as the Prophet Isaiah proclaimed, “like streams of water in a dry place, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.” (Isaiah 32:2)
Peace is what will bring harmony and joy to our earth and all its’ people. Never speaking of peace sows seeds of discord and hatred. We must be brave to,stand tall in spirit and work, together across oceans and seas. There is no wall to Peace. There is an open heart full of justice and mercy for all. The world is not controlled by guns and wars. The world is controlled by a creator that gave all fo the good of all. No nomination. No hatred. Only Peace and Shari g respectfullynwith all as we take small steps to mend the heart of the Universe. Peace is the torch of Compasdion.
Dear Dominican Sisters,
I applaud you for your concern relating to the Trump’s Administration decision as per noted above.
I, too, pray for peace. In fact, A Sister of Notre Dame, Sr. Margaret Mary Kane, (now deceased) introduced me to Church Women United, a movement for peace that was started by CEO’s wives around the time of WWII. Amazing women of all denominations, and eventually Roman Catholics were welcomed into the movement. At one time I was President of one of the Units.
My question, are you confident Iran is not continuing to develop its nuclear weapon capacity. Do you have inside information our gov’t does not??? If so, let this information become available.
How do we determine what is going on in Iran?
The same thing holds true for North Korea? Are you aware one reason Kim Jung Un is willing to have conversations with the USA has to do with the destruction of their nuclear site. Are you aware the last testing caused a crack in the tectonic plates. Is it possible that is what is causing the volcanic eruptions in Hawaii? (Just a hunch but not sure and not part of the discussion pertaining to the above statement made by the Dominican Sisters.)
What I am suggesting: give the Trump Administration a chance to prove they know how to deal with foreign policy and maybe, just maybe, peace can be the end result. Is it possible dear Dominican Sisters your prayers can be added to those already for President Trump and his Administration to end the nuclear scare by all nations through his knowledgeable and expertise as found in his book The Art of the Deal.
I pray you all, Love, Peace and Joy,
ER
Thank you for your thoughtful comments, Elizabeth. The Iran Nuclear Deal was flawed, yes, but even so the multilateral deal is widely recognized as having achieved its goal of preventing Iran from continuing to develop its nuclear weapons capacity. We believe that the deal makes it functionally impossible for Iran to acquire nuclear weapons and that the IAEA has repeatedly confirmed that Iran is complying with all of its obligations under the deal. (Citations: https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/focus/iran, https://www.vox.com/world/2018/5/8/17328858/iran-nuclear-deal-trump-announcement-chart)
Iran should not have nuclear weapons. North Korea should not have nuclear weapons. Since 2008, we have as a corporation publicly called upon the United States Government to lead the way for global abolition of nuclear weapons of mass destruction by adopting a plan to lock down, reduce, and eliminate nuclear weapons of mass destruction. As you mention in your comment, we too seek peace. We were praying for Donald Trump even before he was elected (and we encouraged others to join us: https://ophope.org/spirituality/this-tuesday-join-us-in-prayer). We continue to do so. We are reluctant to rely on The Art of the Deal as evidence of President Trump’s expertise, as the author of the book, Tony Schwartz, has since publicly admitted that he wrote the book based on fabrications rather than on facts (citation: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/07/25/donald-trumps-ghostwriter-tells-all). That said, we continue to pray for our President, for all elected officials, for our global family, and for our world! May there be peace on Earth; let it begin with us.
Blessings to you today, Elizabeth.
Thank you for sending such a focused, articulate, and unwavering statement.
Thanks for commenting, Joan. Blessings to you today!

Thanks, Anne! As one global family, it is right to be concerned for each other. Blessings to you today.
Excuse my mistyped words. Then I thought. Makes you stop and think and ponder perhaps more deeply the true meaning of peace…will always be in the torch of compassion and hope for every human being. Let each one of us dare to be the spirit of peace in all our daily words, deeds and actions. No domination of one group against another with nuclear power. The real power will be in how we treat one another and our planet.
Thank you for both of your comments, Sister. Blessings to you!
Beautiful and important statement. Our current administration is heading us straight into WWIII and everyone must speak out against this.
