Center at Mariandale, Ossining, NY
The Dominican Sisters of Hope are engaged in a pollinator habitat restoration project on 6 acres of their 61-acre property known as Mariandale in Ossining, NY. We are seeking a seasonal part-time gardener (12 to 15 hours/week, minimum of three days/week) who will work under the direction of a professional landscape designer. The position will run through October or November, depending on the weather. This is a non-benefit-eligible, nonexempt position.
Major responsibilities include assisting in:
The eradication of invasive species through mechanical means.
The planting and/or maintenance of native pollinator-friendly grasses, shrubs, and trees and experience installing plugs, whips, and larger plants as directed.
The occasional direction and supervision of volunteer groups for in-field assistance.
Requirements:
- The ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Working proficiency of English.
- Reliability, dependability and the ability to work independently.
- Knowledge of and interest in further learning about native plant species and their associated pollinators.
- Physical fitness and stamina for manual work, including working on slopes, crouching, bending, kneeling, pulling, pushing, and lifting.
- At least one year of gardening, planting, maintenance and weeding experience.
- Experience using hand tools and equipment for tasks including selective weeding/trimming (i.e. handheld brush cutter), elimination of the rhizomes of invasive plants (i.e. cultivator), and smothering techniques (i.e. use of cardboard or plastic).
- Prior experience with pollinator gardening a plus.
- A background check and drug test will be required.
Rate of Pay: $22 – $24 per hour.
