Sister Maria Barbera Named Volunteer of the Year at The Wartburg

On December 5th, 2024, Sister Maria Barbera, OP was honored as The Wartburg’s Volunteer of the Year.

Sister Maria participates in many Wartburg programs, and can be found greeting people, interacting with residents, and making sure everyone feels included in holiday, volunteer, and social activities on campus. Her “ministry of availability,” as she describes her current ministry and phase of life, means that she’s a friendly face bringing hope to whomever she encounters throughout the day.

For David J. Gentner, the CEO/President of the Wartburg, Sister Maria was the first resident of the Friedrichs Residence that he met.

He was immediately impressed by how “interesting and passionate about life she was.”

“She is a steadfast volunteer in all aspects of our residents’ lives,” Gentner said. “She loves music and opera. She’s there for youth programs. Not to mention prayer, spirituality, and sharing stories. I knew as soon as I met her that Friedrichs was going to be a success if her presence was in the building.”

Sister Maria gathered with members of the leadership team, family, and other Dominican Sisters of Hope to celebrate. Dominican Sister of Hope Mary Elizabeth DeBoer, who was Volunteer of the Year at The Wartburg and in Westchester County last year, was also given an award for her service. The entire congregation was additionally given a service award.

According to Sister Patricia Magee, OP, Sister Maria’s “ministry of availability” is a major way that she preaches the transforming power of Hope.

“We’re so proud of her easy generosity, presence of hope, and gift of reflecting Hope to all whom she encounters,” Sister Pat said.

Upon accepting her award, Sister Maria said that she lives for “art and love.”

“Love is never gone as we travel on,” she told the crowd, quoting What I Did for Love. “Love will be remembered.”
